VIRTUAL PD: In this series, there are five different 6-hour (full-day) virtual Professional Developments (PDs) offered the week of Monday, August 12 to Friday, August 16 at 9am-3pm. Zoom links will be sent out the first week in August.
COST: The registration cost per 6-hour session for members is $270. Registration cost per 6-hour session for non-members is $320 (includes yearly $50 membership fee – learn more about MABE member benefits here). First select your member status, and then select the sessions you would like to attend.
AUDIENCE: Designed for educators at all levels in DLE programs, especially new and establishing programs and educators.

Thursday, August 15 Developing a Scope and Sequence for K-2 Portuguese Foundational Skills - NEW! Facilitator: Silvia Lima, Dual Language Coordinator, International Charter School, RI Description: In this session, teachers will learn how to develop/adapt a scope and sequence in Portuguese and align it with their English scope and sequence. They will learn how to identify similarities and differences between the two languages and analyze what patterns can be transferable from one language to the other.
REGISTRATION: Registration closes Monday, August 1. Minimum of 10 registrants per PD.

AUDIENCE: Designed for DLE educators with 3+ years of experience. Unless otherwise specified, examples of strategies in sessions will primarily focus on Spanish-English programs, but can be applied to any DLE programming. SESSIONS:

Tuesday, August 13 Así Se Dice & Dictado: Strategies for Teaching Cross-Linguistic Connections Facilitator: Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MA Description: This session is designed to share strategies from Literacy Squared’s Así Se Dice to explicitly teach cross linguistic connections in Spanish DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted metalinguistic awareness language objectives that compare and contrast English and a partner language in a contextualized setting, focusing on the difference between literal and conceptual translations. We will also share strategies from Literacy Squared’s Dictado to explicitly teach phonics, syntax and grammar in Spanish DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted metalinguistic awareness language objectives for dictation exercises that allow students to increase their academic language through writing and editing.
Thursday, August 15 Academic Conversations and Visible Thinking Routines: Introduction to Oracy Routines Facilitator: Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MADescription: This PD opportunity is designed to share strategies from Jeff Zwier’s Academic Conversations to explicitly teach oracy in DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted language objectives for teaching discourse moves that allow students to increase their academic language through listening and speaking. We will also share strategies from Harvard's Project Zero's Visible Thinking Routines to explicitly teach oracy in DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted language objectives for thinking routines that allow students to increase their academic language through listening and speaking.

Thursday, August 15 Manuscrito - Herramienta de evaluación del desarrollo de la escritura en español - As seen in MABE 2024 Facilitator: Ayda Parra-Rojas, Dual Language Specialist, Windham Public Schools, CT Description: How do we evaluate Spanish expressive writing using Spanish writing research and Spanish LAS-Links? This session will respond to questions such as: How do we measure expressive writing in Spanish grades PK-8? How can we as educators effectively encourage creativity and expression in DL young writers while still focusing on Spanish foundational writing skills? How does having Manuscrito help teachers make decisions to analyze writing pieces and then figure out next steps? In this session, participants will learn how to analyze expressive Spanish writing samples with an authentic tool called Manuscrito.

Thursday, August 15What Is (and Isn’t) the Science of ReadingFacilitator: Violet Jiménez Sims & Victoria Whaley, CT Teacher Residency Program Description: Local and national mandates have pushed the "Science of Reading" center stage. But what does the term really mean? How can you know whether what you are implementing is the science of reading? This session will provide an overview of the scope and limitations of the science of reading and practical ideas of how to implement it in the context of DLE. This session is intended for novice and experienced DLE leaders.
