AUDIENCE: Critical Issues for Leaders of Dual Language Education (DLBE) Programs is a professional development series designed for DLBE leaders. Further experience levels may be specified in session descriptions below.


ENSURING SUCCESS OF A DLBE STRAND 

This PD will take a look at the foundational pillars necessary for a successful DLBE program. Participants will explore instructional practices and ways to build community and cultures in the program strand within the schoolThis PD is intended for novice DLBE leaders, or anyone that needs a refresher.

    DLE CLASSROOM WALKTHROUGH PROTOCOL

    In this PD, participants will explore the Classroom Walkthrough Protocol and discuss strategies for a successful implementation. Participants will collaborate to identify district readiness for this protocol. This PD is intended for novice DLBE leaders, or anyone that needs a refresher.

    WHAT IS (AND ISN’T) THE SCIENCE OF READING

    Local and national mandates have pushed the "Science of Reading" center stage. But what does the term really mean? How can you know whether what you are implementing is the science of reading? This PD will provide an overview of the scope and limitations of the science of reading and practical ideas of how to implement it in the context of DLBE. This PD is intended for novice and experienced DLBE leaders.

    BILINGUAL TEACHER RECRUITMENT, HIRING, & RETENTION 

    This session will explore concrete strategies for addressing the challenges of recruiting, hiring, and retaining qualified bilingual teachers and staff. We will discuss the process for building a comprehensive district-wide approach to recruitment and hiring, as well as the potential for fund-stacking opportunities to support teacher growth and development in a “grow-your-own” model.

      DLBE LEADERSHIP DILEMMAS  

      This session will explore common dilemmas faced by DLBE leaders and brainstorm possible solutions. Based on work from the Center for Leadership and Educational Equity, the session will use foundational principles of leadership, adapted for the unique needs of DLBE, to address key challenges in DLBE leadership.

        QUIETING THE NOISE

        This PD will provide background knowledge necessary to center research-based practice and for “quieting the noise” that can arise from different stakeholders’ perspectives. Separating historical context and linguistically sustaining practices from rhetoric will take your DLBE leadership and advocacy to the highest levels of success. This PD is intended for novice and experienced DLBE leaders.
